Police Detective Sergeant Cleared of Charges After Four-Year Legal Matter
Police Detective Sergeant Elfannando Newman has been cleared of charges that were brought against him by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) approximately four years ago in relation to allegations of Larceny by a Public Officer.
The charges against Newman, who had been interdicted from duty during the proceedings, were dismissed by Magistrate Sunil Scarce after the court found deficiencies in the prosecution’s case, citing insufficient evidence and concerns regarding the adequacy and reliability of witness testimony.
The allegations had asserted that Newman, in the execution of his duties as a public officer, improperly dealt with approximately seven kilograms of cannabis that had allegedly been received and processed through the Timehri Police Station.
Following the allegations, SOCU conducted a civil forfeiture investigation, contending that the quantity of cannabis that was expected to have been officially lodged was not accounted for.
Newman was represented by Attorney-at-Law Eusi Anderson throughout the proceedings. Commenting on the outcome, Anderson stated that after approximately four years of litigation and witness testimonies, the court concluded that the prosecution had failed to present evidence sufficient to satisfy the required legal standard for conviction.
With the dismissal of the charges, Newman has indicated a desire to have his name fully cleared. It is anticipated that, following the conclusion of the matter, he may be eligible to resume his duties within the Guyana Police Force, subject to any applicable administrative processes.
